Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
When the Body Tells the Story Words Cannot Find
Traditional therapy often focuses on the "narrative"—the story of what happened. But for many, the story isn't just in their memory; it is held in their posture, the way they breathe, and the way their muscles brace against the world.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a body-centered approach that treats the somatic (physical) symptoms of trauma and attachment issues. It recognises that our bodies are incredibly clever; they develop physical "habits" of protection that keep us safe during difficult times, but these same habits can keep us stuck in the past long after the danger has gone.
How SP Works in Our Sessions
In an SP session, we use the "bottom-up" approach. We start with your physical experience in the present moment—a gesture, a change in heart rate, or a sudden heaviness in your limbs.
Mindfulness: We slow down to notice the "felt sense" of your body.
Completing the Action: Often, trauma leaves us with "unfinished" physical impulses (the urge to run, to push away, or to hide). We safely and gently allow the body to find the movement it needed to make back then.
Regulation: We work within your Window of Tolerance, ensuring your nervous system stays regulated so you can process the pain without being overwhelmed.
Reclaiming Your Body
The goal of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is to help you move from a state of "survival" to a state of "being." By processing these physical "splinters," you can begin to feel at home in your own skin again. You move from a body that feels like a battlefield to a body that feels like a safe place to live.
